Meet Brasshouse Lane/ Great Arthur St. Carpark.

Last year we walked from the summit towards Birmingham. This year we will walk in the opposite direction towards Oldbury. Like Last year we will be looking at the improvements made to this waterway  by the three great canal engineers, James Brindley, John Smeeton and Thomas Telford.

Wednesday 6 June 2018.

Moxley and Moorcroft Wood. Leader Keith Hodgkins.

Meet on the on the bridge over the Walsall canal in Bull Lane ,Moxley, Wednesbury .WS10 8 RW. Ample Street parking.

A Walk along the Walsall canal to visit the hamlet of Moxley which sat at the meeting point of three local authorities. Bilston, Darlaston and Wednesbury. Today it is part of the Borough of Walsall but has a Wednesbury postal address. Such is the endless complication of Black Country boundaries. The name Moxley will be familiar to many from its Isolation Hospital which closed in 1995 since when its wooded grounds became the Moorcroft wood Nature reserve which is also now a designated Geosite in the Black Country  Geopark Project. An ironworks occupied the site in the early 19th century and its surviving slag tips now form one of the most enigmatic of Black Country landscapes.

Wednesday 27 June 2018

Gods offices, A "Downton Abbey" Family, and a Popular Princess. -

All at Great Barr. Leader Robin Pearson.

A bishop's boyhood home, a park with bats and birds, a very unusual family with parakeets, and a memorial to the much admired princess Charlotte at whose funeral public grief similar to that for Princess Diana was expressed - had Charlotte survived in 1817 there would not have been a Victorian era ! Finish off with a drink at a rebuilt historic pub and then catch the No5 (at29/59 past the hour - bus pass or £ 1.50) for a 4 minute journey back to the starting point or take a brisk 20+ minute walk.
